چکیده
Materials and methods Five female patients with a median age of 14 years (range: 12–16 years) with class IV (3/5) and class II (2/5) lupus nephritis were treated with rituximab, steroids and plasmapheresis. Rituximab was given with a dose of 375 mg/ m2/week for 4 weeks. Two patients had severe thrombocytopenia, while one of them had developed macrophage activating syndrome. All of them had renal failure with high serum creatinine. ANA and anti ds DNA levels were found to be high in 4 patients with low levels of compleman 3.

Rituximab in severe lupus nephritis: early B-cell depletion affects long-term renal outcome.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Standard treatment for lupus nephritis, including corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide, is efficient but is still associated with refractory or relapsing disease, or severe deleterious effects. Rituximab, a monoclonal chimeric anti-B cell antibody, is increasingly used in patients with lupus nephritis, but reported series were small and had a short follow-up. DESIGN,...

متن کاملRituximab is an effective treatment for lupus nephritis and allows a reduction in maintenance steroids.
BACKGROUND Lupus nephritis is a life-threatening complication of SLE. Treatment regimes include steroids and cyclophosphamide, both associated with significant morbidity. Newer regimes include mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). We report our outcomes in a prospectively monitored cohort of patients receiving our new standard treatment protocol, comprising rituximab induction therapy and MMF maintenanc...
متن کاملLupus nephritis flare in young patients: relapse or nonadherence to treatment?
PURPOSE Adherence is a challenging issue in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus. Nonadherence has been widely addressed in patients with lupus and must be detected quickly to prevent severe complications. The cases we present illustrate the importance of adherence in young adults. CASE 1 A 23-year-old Spanish woman diagnosed with severe lupus nephritis 8 years previously achieved re...
متن کاملUnderstanding lupus nephritis: diagnosis, management, and treatment options
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) predominantly affects women in their reproductive years. Renal disease (glomerulonephritis) is one of the most frequent and serious manifestations of SLE. Of the various histological types of lupus glomerulonephritis, diffuse proliferative nephritis carries the worst prognosis. Combined with high-dose prednisone, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) has emerged as a fi...
